What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture with New Albany IN Acupuncturist at 1st Choice Health and Wellness family for sports injuries, Spinal issues, back pain & more

Acupuncture comes from a traditional form of Chinese medicine that works by improving the body’s functions. It promotes the body’s ability to self-heal by stimulating certain acupuncture points, also referred to as acupoints, located throughout the body. Acupuncture has been reportedly used in China for over 300 decades (3000 years). Acupuncture helps your mind, body, and spirit rebalance, allowing your body to begin healing in very level.

How does acupuncture work?

Your body’s functions and organs are controlled by your life force, also known as a Qi. Your life force flows like a river through your body, always passing through twelve points, also known as meridians. When your life force is no longer balanced, it can lead to illness and much more. When acupuncture is performed on the body, the needles are inserted into these twelve points, allowing it access to your life force. This will help bring your body and life force back into balance.

What are the benefits of acupuncture?

Acupuncture has many benefits, especially for individuals who receive regular treatments. Patients have expressed that acupunctured has helped them reduce stress and pain, have a better quality of sleep and improved digestion, as well as better emotional stability, and increased joint flexibility. Patients who have the treatments done regularly have found that it helped improve their overall health and make better lifestyle choices.

Acupuncture awakens the body’s ability to heal deeper. I also helps patients become more aware of their body, mind, and spirit, which is important because they are connected.

What should I expect during an acupuncture session in New Albany IN?

During your first acupuncture visit the acupuncturist will discuss with you, your health history, how your body functions (bowel movements, eating habits, menstrual cycle, etc), and what your relationships are like with the people around you. Acupuncture is meant to heal more than just your body, it also heals your mind and spirit, which is why the acupuncturist needs to get a good understanding of your lifestyle and needs. Your acupuncturist will go through “The Four Inspections”, where they will need to ask, see, touch, and feel to better assess your body and determine your ailments. In this inspection, they will examine you by touching you (example: taking your pulse), by seeing you (example: examining your tongue), by asking you a series of questions, and by “feeling” your energy.

After the assessment and initial consultation is complete the acupuncturist will begin inserting the needles in very specific locations. When the needle is inserted you may or may not feel a sharp or stinging sensation that lasts a few seconds. Some patients have also experienced a deep ache for a short period of time in some of the points. In some cases, your acupuncturist may gently manipulate the needles or use heat or electricity to better affect your life force.

The needles will then be left in place for anywhere from 5 to about 20 minutes sometimes more, but never longer than 60 minutes, and are then removed.
