Plantar Fasciitis

One of the common reasons clients visit 1st Choice Health & Wellness in New Albany, IN is chronic foot pain. Many things cause sore, aching feet – improper gait resulting from arthritic hips, knees and ankle joints, poorly fitting shoes, a job that requires long hours standing on concrete floors. When foot pain doesn't respond to traditional medical treatments, you could be suffering from Plantar Fasciitis.Woman running in New Albany, IN

The Condition: Painful Inflammation & Foot Pain

Plantar fasciitis is a condition that involves irritation and inflammation of a band of fibers running from the heel, along the bottom of the foot, to the base of the toes. Pain often originates in the heel and radiates sharply along the bottom inside edge of the foot.

Some people report a sensation that feels like a rubber band attached to the heel that tightens when they try to walk or put their full weight on the foot. While the name implies the primary problem is the plantar fascia ligament, other muscles and tissues in the bottom of the foot can cause pain and negative impact on mobility.

Symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis

Some of the most common symptoms are listed below. This is not a complete list and any prolonged foot pain should be evaluated.

1.  Throbbing

2. Pain in the bottom of the foot, especially with the first few steps of the morning.

3. A sensation in the heel that feels like you have a stone in your shoe.

4. Tightening of the Achilles tendon.

5. Redness, swelling and tenderness along the inside bottom edge of the foot.

6. Sharp pain when curling the toes or standing on tip toes.

Treating Plantar Fasciitis in New Albany

Doctors often recommend over-the-counter analgesics and a modified activity schedule to help the affected fibers calm down. The 1st Choice Health and Wellness physical therapy protocol looks at the whole body, not just the foot. Our protocol includes an in-depth exam, proper alignment of the bones in the foot and spine, a series of in-office and home exercises, orthotics and special FDA-cleared laser treatments for foot and heel pain that promotes healing from within.

When muscles are overworked, whether through a rigorous training session or suddenly increasing the length of your morning jog without taking time to gradually work up to the extra miles, they shorten. As the muscles shorten, they are more vulnerable to injury and damage. Unlike the mantra of many physical trainers today, we never recommend you work through the pain. If it hurts to walk, you need to schedule an appointment with our doctors and physical therapists.
